MEDA 101 Sound Project Statement

For my sound project, “The Clock Ticks On”, I decided to explore the effects of institutionalised patriarchal authority over the individual. My aim is to make a comment on the entrenched characteristics, both obvious and subtle, that manifest from this form of authority. One such aspect of this I aimed to develop is the controlled space of women, both public and private, that creates an environment of controlled fear.

I am hoping my piece will influence the listener to reflect on the control of their own personal space. In order to achieve this, I have created a singular female voice and multiple male voices speaking unanimously to highlight the weight and impact of patriarchal society on the individual. The ambiguous sounds represent a removal from the freedom of nature and a direction towards the controlled environment that patriarchal authority manifests in.

I expect the audience to feel anxious and uncomfortable with this piece. I also expect the audience will have many mixed interpretations and responses around the repeated statement, “I’m going out”.

I’d love to hear your feelings/ interpretations in the comments below!
